Why menswear basics keep your shop steady
In most small-town clothing shops, women's and festive wear bring the excitement, but men's basics bring the steady cash. A man who walks in for a shirt usually knows what he wants, buys quickly and comes back for the same thing when it wears out. That makes basics some of the easiest stock to plan.
Basics also bring families into your shop. When the husband, father or son can find a decent shirt or pair of jeans at your counter, the whole family is more likely to shop with you instead of travelling to the city.
The trick is to carry the right basics in the right sizes, and to avoid locking money into fashion pieces that your town is not asking for. This guide gives you a simple starting list and a way to stock it without overbuying.
The core list: what every shop should have on the shelf
Think of these as the pieces a customer expects to find every single week. If they are missing, he walks out and may not come back.
- Formal and semi-formal shirts: plain white, light blue and a few small checks or stripes for office, school staff and functions.
- Casual shirts: checks, solid cottons and a few prints for younger buyers.
- Trousers: formal trousers in black, navy and grey, plus cotton chinos in beige and olive.
- Jeans: dark blue and black in regular and slim fit. These sell all year.
- T-shirts and polos: round-neck tees in plain colours and a few polos for the customer who wants something smarter than a tee.
- Innerwear and socks: vests, briefs and socks are small tickets but bring customers back every month.
- One or two ethnic basics: a plain kurta and kurta-pyjama set for poojas, weddings and festivals.
Sizes and colours: where most shops go wrong
Running out of the common sizes while odd sizes pile up is the most common menswear problem. For shirts and tees, most small-town shops sell the most in M, L and XL, with fewer S and XXL. Check your own bills from last season before you decide, because every town is a little different.
For trousers and jeans, waist sizes 30 to 36 usually move fastest. Keep only a few pieces of 28 and 38 plus, and reorder them when they sell instead of buying a full set.
Colour works the same way. Plain white, light blue, navy, black and grey almost never become dead stock. Bright or unusual colours can sell well, but buy them in small lots and see how your customers react first.
A simple rule: around two thirds of your menswear money in safe sizes and safe colours, the rest in trend pieces you are testing.
Season by season: what to add and when
Basics sell all year, but each season adds its own demand. Plan these a few weeks before the season starts, not when customers are already asking.
- Festive season (Navratri to Diwali): kurtas, kurta sets, Nehru jackets and smarter shirts for family functions.
- Wedding season: formal shirts, trousers, blazers and ethnic sets for guests.
- Winter, especially in North India: sweatshirts, hoodies, jackets, thermals and full-sleeve tees.
- Summer: cotton and linen shirts, shorts, light tees and polos.
- School and college reopening: jeans, tees and casual shirts for students.
How much to buy on your first order
If menswear is new for your shop, or you are adding a new type of piece, start small. Pick a handful of styles in each category, buy a few pieces of each in your fast sizes, and watch what sells over the next three to four weeks.
Wholesale brands set a minimum order quantity (MOQ) for each style. Looking for listings with small MOQs lets you test more styles with the same money. On GarmentBazaar you can sort collections by lowest MOQ first, and the wholesale price per piece is shown on every listing before you sign up, so you can work out your budget in advance.
Before you order, use the free margin calculator on the GarmentBazaar homepage to check that each piece leaves you a healthy margin after freight and other costs. A shirt that sells fast but earns too little does not help your shop.
Reorder fast, don't overstock
With basics, the money is in reordering, not in one big buy. When a style of white shirt or dark jeans sells out in your common sizes, reorder the same thing quickly. Customers who find their size every time become loyal.
Keep a simple weekly note of which menswear styles sold and which sizes ran out. A notebook or a WhatsApp note to yourself is enough. After a month, you will know exactly what your town buys.
Your GarmentBazaar retailer dashboard keeps your order history, so reordering a style that worked takes one tap, without a trip to the mandi.
Display tips that sell more menswear
Men often shop in a hurry, so make it easy to find things. Stack shirts by size and colour, and label the shelves with sizes. Keep jeans folded by waist size with the size visible.
Show complete looks on one mannequin or hanger: a shirt with chinos and a belt, or a kurta with a Nehru jacket. Many customers buy the whole look instead of one piece. Keep socks, belts and wallets near the billing counter as easy add-ons that lift the bill.
